Dr. Bharatsinh Solanki: A Journey of Preserving Heritage and Empowering Thousands of Artisans

From a remote village in Gujarat to empowering thousands of traditional artisans, Dr. Bharatsinh Solanki’s journey reflects the power of education, determination, and a commitment to creating meaningful social change.

From a Small Village to a Bigger Vision

Born and raised in Morwada, a remote border village in Suigam Taluka of Gujarat’s Vav-Tharad district, Dr. Bharatsinh Solanki grew up with an endless curiosity for reading and learning. What began as a childhood interest gradually developed into a lifelong pursuit of knowledge and social service.

With around 18 degrees and certifications across disciplines including Engineering, Journalism, Law, Art and Heritage, Education, Yoga, Naturopathy, and Social Sciences, his academic journey reflects his belief that education should serve a purpose beyond personal achievement.

His professional experiences have taken him across Gujarat, including Patan, Rajkot, Vadodara, Ahmedabad, and Surat. He served as an Assistant Professor in Rajkot and was selected as a Divya Bhaskar Fellow in Ahmedabad in 2022. In 2026, he earned his Ph.D., adding another milestone to his academic journey.

Currently based in Surat, Dr. Solanki works closely with the District Industries Centre (DIC), focusing on the handicraft and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sectors.

Protecting the Hands That Preserve Our Heritage

For Dr. Solanki, traditional handicrafts are far more than decorative products. They represent generations of creativity, cultural identity, and inherited knowledge.

However, his interactions with artisans revealed a troubling reality. Many highly skilled craftspeople struggled to earn sustainable incomes despite dedicating their lives to their craft. Some were forced into daily-wage labour, while younger generations increasingly moved away from traditional occupations.

Limited market access, exploitation by intermediaries, inadequate awareness of government schemes, and unfair compensation made their circumstances even more challenging.

Witnessing these struggles motivated him to take meaningful action.

Through EDII’s Hastkala Setu Yojana, he began working directly with local artisans, understanding their concerns and helping them access skill development, training, government support, exhibitions, and market opportunities.

Over the years, he has worked with thousands of artisans, supporting their efforts to achieve financial independence and recognition.

His mission is not simply to preserve traditional craftsmanship but to ensure that the people behind it can build dignified and sustainable livelihoods.

Building Trust Before Creating Change

One of the greatest challenges Dr. Solanki encountered was convincing artisans to explore unfamiliar opportunities.

Many were hesitant to adopt digital tools, participate in government schemes, or approach modern markets. Their concerns required patience, understanding, and consistent guidance.

Rather than expecting immediate change, he focused on building personal relationships through training, communication, and continuous support.

The journey was not always easy. During the initial stages, progress often seemed slow, and the lack of immediate results sometimes left him frustrated.

Yet the trust of artisan families and the positive changes he witnessed encouraged him to continue.

His experiences taught him that meaningful social transformation cannot happen overnight. It begins when communities feel respected, understood, and supported.

A Moment That Made Every Effort Worthwhile

Among the many experiences that shaped his journey, one particular incident remains especially close to his heart.

A female artisan whom he had guided and supported received a prestigious State Award for her work.

Overwhelmed with happiness, she called him and said:

“Sir, if you hadn’t guided and supported me through this process, this award would never have been possible.”

For Dr. Solanki, that moment represented something much greater than an award.

It demonstrated how encouragement, guidance, and access to opportunities could transform an individual’s confidence and future.

Similarly, receiving heartfelt messages from artisans after successful exhibitions and watching them gain recognition have been some of his most rewarding experiences.

In September 2026, his contributions to the community were recognised when he received the Youth Leader Award at the Surat Youth Leadership Forum, organised by Surat Global Shapers.

Connecting the Younger Generation With Traditional Crafts

Dr. Solanki believes that cultural preservation cannot succeed without the involvement of young people.

Through workshops, seminars, exhibitions, and educational initiatives in schools, colleges, and universities, he works to introduce students to Gujarat’s traditional handicrafts.

These interactions help young people understand the creativity, dedication, and cultural significance behind handmade products.

His vision extends beyond awareness. He hopes to encourage collaboration among artisans, educational institutions, designers, entrepreneurs, government departments, and buyers.

By connecting traditional skills with modern opportunities, he aims to make handicrafts both culturally relevant and economically sustainable.

A Future Where Every Artisan Is Valued

Looking ahead, Dr. Solanki wants to strengthen direct market access for artisans, reduce their dependence on exploitative intermediaries, and improve their understanding of digital platforms, branding, product presentation, and government support.

He envisions a society where traditional artisans are respected as skilled professionals and where young people take pride in preserving local heritage.

His journey has also reshaped his understanding of personal success. Academic qualifications and professional achievements, he believes, become truly meaningful when they contribute to improving the lives of others.

For those who wish to make a difference, his message is simple: begin with genuine intentions and meaningful actions.

Buying directly from local artisans, promoting their products, sharing their stories, or helping them develop digital skills can create valuable opportunities.

Dr. Bharatsinh Solanki’s journey reminds us that preserving heritage is not only about protecting traditions. It is about empowering the people who keep those traditions alive.

Through education, empathy, and grassroots action, he continues working towards a future where craftsmanship brings not only cultural pride but also dignity, recognition, and financial independence to the artisans who deserve it.
