Mumbai Schools Now Teach Garba Every Week – Should Gujarat Follow?

Imagine students dancing to the beats of Garba right inside their classrooms! Sounds exciting, right? That’s exactly what’s happening in five schools in Mumbai, where Garba has now become a regular part of the weekly school routine.

Starting from June 20th, schools under the Gujarat Kelavani Mandal and Ghataldiya Ramchar Group have introduced Garba as a weekly activity for students from grades 5 to 10. Every week, students will gather to dance, connect with their culture, and most importantly—have fun while learning!

What makes this initiative even more special is that it’s not just for enjoyment. Students who actively participate and attend these Garba sessions will get practical marks, and those who complete five sessions will earn a 3% bonus in their SSC board exams. That’s a wonderful way to mix tradition with academics!

This step is being appreciated by many as a refreshing way to celebrate culture while promoting fitness and joy among children. It also raises a big question for all of us here in Gujarat:

“When Garba, our very own cultural pride, is being celebrated in Mumbai schools… shouldn’t we also give it space in our classrooms?”

It’s heartening to see such a move. Learning doesn’t have to be only about books—sometimes, it’s about rhythm, tradition, and dancing your heart out.
