Rejoicing 10 years of the movie “The Lunchbox” with its undying lessons

“The Lunchbox,” a 2013 gem directed by Ritesh Batra and starring Nimrat Kaur (as Ila), Irrfan Khan (as Saajan), and Nawazuddin Siddiqui (a widower), is undoubtedly one of those cinematic treasures.

Sometimes, even the wrong train takes us to the right station,” this dialogue is the core of the film. Beyond its heartwarming narrative and exceptional performances, this film imparts a multitude of valuable life lessons that we can all savor and learn from.

The Unpredictability of Life

“The Lunchbox” reminds us that life is filled with unexpected twists and turns. The accidental lunchbox swap between characters Ila and Saajan sets the stage for an unexpected connection that neither of them saw coming. This teaches us to embrace life’s unpredictability and be open to the unexpected surprises it has in store.

Human connection is the cure for loneliness

In a world that often praises self-reliance and independence, The Lunchbox boldly highlights the significance of human connection. It’s the genuine connections we forge with others that offer solace and meaning. Mr. Fernandes, despite initially appearing self-sufficient, reminds us that we all need people in our lives. Mr. Fernandes initially seems unaffected by the world around him. However, as the story unfolds, Ila and he begin to share their life stories through letters in the lunchbox, and we witness a remarkable change in him. Expectation, excitement, and even the occasional smile starts to outward on his face as he waits for Ila’s letters and the delicious meals she sends. “I think we forget things if there is nobody to tell them, ” is how Mr. Fernandes describes his lonely state of mindset to Ila and we couldn’t help but silently take in the profoundness of this statement.

Happily Ever After is a myth

Ila, who carries a lot of love within her, devotes herself entirely to her husband and daughter, neglecting to reserve any affection for herself. Later, upon discovering her husband’s unfaithfulness, she tries to channel her affection towards Mr. Fernandes in pursuit of happiness through another person. It’s a transformative moment when Ila witnesses her widowed mother and she candidly remarks that, “I used to wonder what would become of me after his death, but now I simply feel hungry.”  Ila realizes that the idea of a secure marriage is a myth and it is not worth sacrificing your own happiness.

The movie reminds us that in the ordinary moments of life, we can discover extraordinary wisdom and meaning. “The Lunchbox” continues to be a nourishing meal for the soul, serving up life lessons that will endure for generations to come.
