The Beginning of a Mission
After retiring from their respective careers in education and civil service, the Iyers could have chosen a quiet, comfortable life. However, the reality of the slums near their home shook them to the core. Children playing in unsafe environments, families struggling with inadequate shelter, and the lack of access to basic amenities compelled the couple to act.
Venkat recalls, “Retirement is not the end of work; it’s a chance to redefine its purpose. We wanted to contribute to the society that has given us so much.”
Initiatives Rooted in Empathy
Their efforts began modestly, with Vijaya teaching children in the slums under a makeshift tent. What started as a small tutoring initiative soon grew into a structured education program. Today, dozens of children attend these classes, learning not just academics but also life skills.
Meanwhile, Venkat focused on improving living conditions. Collaborating with NGOs and local authorities, he spearheaded projects to provide clean drinking water, sanitation facilities, and waste management systems. Their home often serves as a coordination hub, buzzing with activity as volunteers and beneficiaries gather to discuss ongoing projects.
Empowering Women and Youth
The couple believes in creating self-sustaining communities. Vijaya organizes skill development workshops for women, teaching them tailoring, handicrafts, and basic financial literacy. “Empowering women creates a ripple effect,” she explains. “It uplifts entire families.”
For the youth, Venkat has initiated vocational training programs, helping them secure jobs in fields like carpentry, plumbing, and computer operations. The duo also conducts sessions on health awareness, emphasizing preventive care and hygiene.
Challenges Along the Way
Their journey has not been without hurdles. From bureaucratic red tape to skepticism from the community, the Iyers have faced their share of challenges. “Change takes time,” Venkat admits. “It requires patience and persistence.”
Their unwavering commitment has earned them the trust of the slum residents, who now affectionately call them Thatha and Paati (grandfather and grandmother).
Inspiring Others to Act
The impact of their work extends beyond their neighborhood. Local schools, corporates, and even college students have joined their mission, volunteering time and resources. The Iyers have shown that meaningful change doesn’t require monumental resources—just a willing heart and steady hands.
A Legacy of Love
As they look back on their journey, the Iyers feel fulfilled. “We may not change the world, but we can change the world for someone,” says Vijaya with a smile.
Venkat and Vijaya Iyer are living proof that retirement is not an end but a new beginning—a time to give back, inspire, and create a legacy of love. Their story is a reminder that in the face of adversity, a single act of kindness can ignite hope and transform lives.
