Unakoti district in Tripura has launched an inspiring “Plastic-Free Unakoti” campaign, installing an astonishing 50,000 dustbins for plastic and dry waste across the region in just one day, setting a new benchmark in environmental stewardship and community cleanliness. Officially inaugurated on December 18, 2025, by District Magistrate Dr. Tamal Majumdar, this historic drive transforms the area into a model of sustainability, with strategic placements in blocks like Kumarghat (11,000 bins), Gournagar (5,000), Chandipur and Penchartal (4,000 each), and urban hubs Kailashahar and Kumarghat (5,000 each), plus government offices.
The initiative strengthens infrastructure with waste segregation centers in every gram panchayat and village committee, transparency workers, dedicated collection vehicles, and new Plastic Waste Management Units, Kumarghat’s already operational, Penchartal’s launching same-day, and tertiary processing centers active in urban areas. This holistic approach promotes responsible waste culture, recycling, and eco-friendly habits, earning praise from District Council Chairman Amalendu Das for fostering lasting change through public participation and media outreach.
Backed by additional district magistrates, block development officers, and local leaders, the campaign highlights Unakoti’s pioneering spirit, potentially India’s first such massive single-day effort, building on national anti-plastic momentum.
