Deepanshu Singh: Empowering Lives Through Martial Arts and Self-Defense
From turning frustration into purpose to empowering thousands of students, Deepanshu Singh’s journey is a story of discipline, determination, and creating a safer society.
From Frustration to Finding a Purpose
Sometimes, the strongest journeys begin with a desire to change something in society. For Deepanshu Singh, a Taekwondo black belt, kickboxer, self-defense coach, and certified personal trainer from Surat, Gujarat, that desire became the foundation of his journey.
Growing up, Deepanshu witnessed harassment, injustice, and situations where people felt helpless. These experiences filled him with frustration, particularly when he felt unable to challenge the wrongs happening around him.
However, his perspective began to change when he discovered martial arts.
Through Taekwondo and kickboxing, he developed physical strength, mental resilience, confidence, and discipline. What initially began as a personal journey gradually transformed into a mission to empower others.
Instead of waiting for society to change, Deepanshu decided to become part of that change.
Turning Martial Arts into a Mission
Deepanshu’s journey as a self-defense coach began with small training sessions in his residential society and neighbourhood. His goal was simple: to help people develop the confidence and skills needed to protect themselves.
Over time, those small sessions expanded into workshops conducted at government schools, universities, corporate organisations, and residential communities.
For more than three years, he has dedicated himself to making self-defense education accessible to students and communities across Gujarat.
Today, he educates over 1,500 students annually in practical self-defense, situational awareness, and crisis de-escalation. Additionally, he trains and certifies more than 900 young women every year through foundational self-defense programmes aligned with government initiatives.
His work demonstrates how a personal passion can grow into a meaningful contribution to society.
Empowering Women Beyond Self-Defense
One of the strongest motivations behind Deepanshu’s work is his commitment to women’s safety and equality.
Growing up with sisters helped him understand the challenges, anxieties, and vulnerabilities women experience in everyday life. These experiences strengthened his belief that women deserve equal opportunities, respect, and the confidence to navigate the world without fear.
Through his workshops, he teaches practical techniques such as threat awareness, boundary defense, and physical self-protection.
However, his vision extends far beyond teaching defensive movements.
He believes that real empowerment comes from creating a society where women are treated with dignity, fairness, and equality.
For Deepanshu, the ultimate achievement would be a world where women no longer need self-defense training simply to feel safe.
His mission is not only to prepare women to protect themselves but also to encourage a broader change in society’s mindset.
Creating an Impact Through Education
Education has become one of the most important platforms for Deepanshu’s mission.
Through government-supported initiatives, he has worked with municipal and public schools across Surat, introducing young girls to foundational self-defense techniques and personal safety awareness.
His involvement also extends to higher education through Youth Brigade, a subsidiary of Invincible NGO.
He has conducted specialised workshops at institutions including Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT), AURO University, Tapi Diploma Engineering College, Bhagwan Mahavir College, and Dr. S. & S.S. Ghandhy Government Engineering & Polytechnic College.
These workshops focus not only on physical techniques but also on developing awareness, confidence, and the ability to respond thoughtfully during challenging situations.
By engaging with students at different educational levels, Deepanshu continues to promote self-defense as an essential life skill rather than an occasional extracurricular activity.
Taking Self-Defense Beyond Classrooms
Deepanshu’s efforts are not limited to educational institutions.
He has also collaborated with corporate organisations and professional training institutions to promote workplace safety, physical wellness, and mental resilience.
At Frankfinn Institute of Air Hostess Training, his sessions address situational defense, threat assessment, and conflict management.
His work with Monkey Ads focuses on workplace safety, physical fitness, and stress management.
Additionally, he has served as the head coach for annual summer camps at Avadh Utopia in Surat and Vapi for three consecutive years.
Alongside these responsibilities, Deepanshu serves as the Brand Ambassador of Awaken Run Club, described in his professional profile as Surat’s largest running club.
Through this role, he promotes endurance running, fitness, discipline, and healthy community living.
Overcoming Challenges with Resilience
Like every meaningful journey, Deepanshu’s path has included challenges.
One of the biggest obstacles he continues to face is the perception that self-defense is merely a hobby or a one-time activity.
He believes effective self-defense requires consistent practice, psychological preparedness, and the development of muscle memory.
Another major challenge came during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, when in-person training became impossible.
Rather than stopping his efforts, Deepanshu adapted by conducting virtual training sessions through Google Meet.
These sessions helped students remain physically active and mentally engaged while staying at home.
As restrictions gradually eased, he resumed community outreach through socially distanced training sessions in residential societies and apartment complexes.
His adaptability reflected the same resilience and determination that martial arts had taught him.
A Vision for a Safer and Stronger Society
For Deepanshu Singh, martial arts represents much more than physical strength, belts, or fighting techniques.
It is about building confidence, developing discipline, overcoming fear, and empowering individuals to stand up for themselves.
From conducting small neighbourhood sessions to reaching thousands of students through educational and community programmes, his journey reflects the power of turning personal experiences into purposeful action.
Yet, despite his growing impact, his ultimate goal remains unchanged: creating a society where women feel safe, respected, and equal.
Deepanshu’s journey reminds us that true strength is not measured only by the ability to defend ourselves, but also by the courage to stand up for others and inspire meaningful change.
