An Overview of Vishwakarma Scheme: Initiative Launched by PM Modi For Artisans
The Vishwakarma Scheme, launched by the Government of India, is a comprehensive initiative to promote and sustain traditional art and craft forms while uplifting the socio-economic status of artisans and craftsmen. Named after Lord Vishwakarma, the divine architect and creator in Hindu mythology, this scheme seeks to harness the immense potential of India’s rich and diverse artisan community.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said,” The government will offer up to 8 percent subsidy for loans given to artisans under the Vishwakarma Yojana launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The government has already made a provision of Rs13,000 crore in the Budget 2023-24”.
The scheme covers 18 activities including carpenter, goldsmith, blacksmith, mason, stone sculpture, barber, and boat makers, she said, adding, that the government will provide up to Rs 3 lakh loan. The components of the scheme will include not only financial support but also access to advanced skill training, knowledge of modern digital techniques and efficient green technologies, brand promotion, linkage with local and global markets, digital payments, and social security.
“Vishwakarma is the architect of this universe. The community members are known for their creative work. Seven wonders of the world are created at the hands of Vishwakarma community members. The new scheme aims to connect them to advanced technology and upgrade their skills,” Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Parshottam Rupala said.
