Aravalli Safeguard: Centre’s Visionary Conservation Blueprint Takes Flight

The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has unveiled a robust, future-focused strategy to preserve the entire Aravalli range spanning Delhi to Gujarat, imposing a comprehensive ban on new mining leases while championing science-led biodiversity protection.

This landmark directive treats the Aravallis as a unified ecological fortress, curbing illegal mining that has scarred its landscapes and replenishing its role as northern India’s vital green lung for water security and climate resilience. The Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) leads the charge with a comprehensive Management Plan for Sustainable Mining (MPSM), identifying expanded no-go zones through rigorous ecological, geological, and landscape assessments, complete with public consultations for inclusive input.

Existing operations benefit from clear, stringent guidelines aligned with Supreme Court mandates, ensuring sustainable practices that balance livelihoods and nature. Over 90% of the 1.44 lakh sq km expanse remains inviolate, with mining confined to a mere 0.19% under enhanced safeguards like Survey of India mapping, clarifying ambiguities and fortifying protections across Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat, and Delhi.

This proactive renaissance builds on Rajasthan’s proven model, amplifying ‘Green Aravalli’ initiatives for restoration and carrying capacity studies. By prioritizing long-term harmony between ecology and development, the Centre positions the Aravallis as a thriving biodiversity beacon, inspiring nationwide conservation triumphs.
