Beena Rao, A Surat city woman who dedicates her life to providing educational opportunities to underserved populations who are overlooked by traditional development. As a grassroots initiative from Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT), Prayas is run by devoted lecturer Beena Rao to offer free education and comprehensive support to youngsters living in slums.
The influence of her father led Beena Rao to start her mission. Through his profession as violinist he chose to offer his teaching services free of charge to blind students throughout his life. Beena took forward the dedication to service by establishing formal teaching responsibilities for underprivileged children during 2006. She took the decision to create Prayas officially in 2009 as she noticed the extensive educational disadvantage faced by children living in slums and wanted to build an organized program serving their academic and personal advancement requirements.

Prayas distinguishes itself through its commitment to teaching students in their entire being. The initiative extends its services beyond teaching by offering personality development lessons while also teaching yoga and arts and crafts and values alongside life skills. The complete program design transforms students into both educated children and confident individuals with self-awareness.
Beena launched two exceptional programs known as the Mobile Library and Mobile Laboratory to minimize logistical and accessibility obstacles. The mobile units serve as educational platforms which transport library resources together with science experiments to children residing in slum communities and districts of rural areas. Through mobile outreach initiatives thousands of children from Surat and surrounding communities have developed curiosity together with learning passion despite the fact they had no access to either libraries or science facilities.
The current operations of Prayas extend across different urban elements and nearby rural communities through dedicated volunteers including numerous student members from local colleges. Through its ongoing operation the project has achieved impact on more than 10,000 children while also decreasing school dropouts within its service regions. Teachers alongside parents observed better study results and greater student self-assurance as well as enhanced conduct from the students.

Life has brought multiple obstacles to Beena during her journey. She encountered opposition from skeptical or threatened local residents in the first part of her work when visiting particular tribal regions. Through her dedication to peace and patience together with community dialogue Beena won over all previous opponents who now support her work. People demonstrate respect for her by calling her Teacher and they actively participate in her efforts.
The organization Prayas led by Beena Rao exemplifies how meaningful transformations occur through sustained dedication as well as compassionate actions backed by absolute educational determination. Her activities show that genuine transformations can start from basic lessons when somebody teaches only one student. Beena created a learning platform which transformed into a movement of hope and dignity and educational opportunity for thousands of children who needed support.
Her story reminds us that with heart and humility, one person truly can make a world of difference.
