A tale of endurance and ambition blossoms in the middle of Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district—that continues beyond generation, beyond environment. Making a glorious mark, Kenamma, the daughter of former bonded labourers has scored a whopping percent 341 out of 600 in her Class 12 state board examination. Her desire to pursue a career as a cardiologist is a shining light and a source of hope and stubborn determination. Kenamma had a challenging beginning of life. Her parents, Amulu and her husband, were taken out of the hell of a brick kiln when she was just six months old.
Alas, the loss of two daughters to illness fell on the family to the extent that Kenamma was the only child left with them. Now a member of a self-help group, Amulu imbued her daughter with the critical thinking that education was the way out of hard times. I have died two daughters to diseases;. Kenamma is my only hope. From the outset, I had made it very clear to her that if she does not want a life like mine then she needs to take her studies seriously,” she explained . Kenamma had various problems in going to a school such as Adi Dravidar Welfare where he had to deal with a scarcity of resources as well as societal expectations. However, with all odds against her, her insistent desire took her to the top of the academe. This ambition to become a cardiologist is not a mere individual dream, it is a testimony to the educational and perseverance transformational power.
Kenamma’s experience captures the larger battles and victories of so many from marginalized communities. Her success demonstrates the vital necessity for access to good education and support systems that enable people to break free from the chains of this poor life and discrimination.
