‘United we stand; divided we fall’, it is necessary to come together and consider issues faced by different world regions. G20 serves the idea of integrity and a feeling of one-ness.
The Group of Twenty (G20) is the premier assembly for international economic cooperation. It significantly strengthens global architecture and strives to look into all major international economic issues. G20 for the year 2023, on the dates of 22nd – 24th May, has been hosted by India under the chairmanship of Narendra Modi. This year’s conference focuses on ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’. This theme aims to signify unity amongst humans, animals, plants and microorganisms along with their integration on planet Earth.
India claims that all the delegates from China have agreed to attend the G20 conference in Kashmir this year. China has said it will not attend, citing its firm opposition “to holding any kind of G20 meetings in disputed areas”. Egypt, Turkey and Saudi Arabia also chose to break away from G20 in Srinagar to avoid controversy. These countries consider Kashmir to be a ‘disputed’ region as multiple countries lay claim to it.
To ensure utmost levels of safety, the Indian government has taken all possible precautions by deploying Nation Security Guard (NSG) and MARCOS commandos around the venue. Jammu and Kashmir Police’s Special Operation Group (SOG) will also be deployed at several places to give security cover. Kashmir has been placed under three-tier surveillance by drones continuously monitoring the region. No restrictions on public commuting were held, and all residents were permitted to welcome the delegates attending the G20 conference. The delegates received a warm Indian welcome at the airport. This 3-day conference will focus on green tourism, digitalisation, MSMEs, and destination management.
The Indian presidency will also spotlight Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE), promoting environmental stability and all citizens’ responsibilities to have and promoting an excellent individual lifestyle and choices for national development.
G20 2023 aims for a cleaner and greener future with unity and integrity concerning the theme ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’.
