As the nation celebrates the 78th National Cadet Corps (NCC) Day, the government has unveiled a major initiative to substantially increase the youth organization’s strength and expand its critical role in national development and security.
The plan aims to boost the strength of the NCC from the current 17 lakh to a significant 20 lakh cadets, signifying a massive push to leverage India’s demographic dividend and strengthen the spirit of service among the youth.
Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, speaking on the occasion after paying respects at the National War Memorial, highlighted the NCC’s standing as a “strong example of the nation’s youth power and potential.” Mr. Singh emphasized that the expansion will enable the Corps to contribute more effectively to both nation-building initiatives and the country’s security architecture.
Leveraging Youth Power and Modern Training
Lieutenant General Virendra Vats, the Director General of the NCC, noted the organization’s widespread presence, confirming its reach into over 700 districts across India, covering approximately 90 percent of all districts. He also proudly pointed out that 40 percent of NCC cadets are female, underscoring the organization’s commitment to gender parity and inclusion.
To prepare cadets for contemporary challenges, DG Vats stressed the necessity of integrating modern technology into the training syllabus. Future focus areas will include crucial skills such as cyber awareness and counter-drone measures, ensuring the cadets are equipped with relevant knowledge for the changing security landscape.
A Legacy of Service
Established in 1948 with just about 20,000 cadets, the NCC has grown multi-fold over seven decades, evolving into the world’s largest uniformed youth organization. Cadets have consistently been at the forefront of community development and humanitarian relief efforts across the country.
The proposed expansion to 20 lakh cadets is not just an increase in numbers; it represents the government’s renewed commitment to fostering discipline, patriotism, and a sense of selfless service among a larger section of India’s youth, further cementing the NCC’s role as a vital contributor to the nation’s future.
