Public sentiment may be divided, but Prince Harry’s explosive memoir has certainly done brisk business in its opening week. Having sold 1.43 million copies on the release day, Spare has become a Guinness Record holder. It is the fastest-selling non-fiction book of all time – outpacing ‘A Promised Land’ by former US President Barack Obama which had sold 8,87,000 copies on the first day of release.
“The figures are made even more impressive when considering that it was leaked five days early in Spain. This meant that most of the revelations contained within made headlines worldwide before the book officially hit shelves. However, it’s entirely possible that these juicy details spurred more people to buy Spare,” an article on the Guinness World Records website suggests.
The UK is divided over what they make of the explosive memoir, although some people believe it humanises the royal family from their previous position of power and prestige by showcasing them as a normal family with everyday family drama, others criticise Harry for airing his family’s dirty laundry out in the open for everyone to see.
A skirmish between William and Harry in 2019, which was revealed in the book made headlines and attracted a lot of media attention. Prince Harry also claimed in an interview with the Telegraph that “he has enough material to write another book, but there is some stuff that happened between him and his brother and him and his father that he can never reveal because they won’t ever forgive him if he did”.
Harry’s popularity in the UK has certainly nosedived since the release of his book. What are your views on the royal family, let us know in the comments below.
