The Government Housing Scheme Surge Ambitiously Plans to Eradicate Homelessness in India

India’s population, being so large, faces so many problems that it’s hard to focus on one to solve first. For example, the major problem in this country is poverty, which means no shelter, food, water, etc. To solve the issue of poverty in India for good, each factor of poverty must be considered. One of the factors, as mentioned above, is shelter or home. Throughout the years, the government has been trying their hardest to solve the problem of homelessness through various schemes.

One such scheme that has stood out recently is Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), under which the campaign theme is “Housing for All by 2022.” This scheme for home loans was launched to achieve the campaign theme. This central government scheme provides economically weaker-segment people and middle-income consumers with affordable housing. In addition to providing an amount for the construction of the property, basic amenities like electricity, gas, and water supply are provided.

Another scheme is The Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY), which aims to eradicate all slums in India. This scheme encourages any illegal construction under a legal framework. The Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP) scheme is a part of RAY, so affordable housing under the scheme is promoted. This scheme shows promising results. As of February 2023, the plan has cost more than INR 1,398 crores and has produced close to 46,000 homes.

There have been schemes launched by the state governments as well, like Haryana Housing Board Scheme, Tamil Nadu Housing Board Scheme, Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority Scheme (MHADA), Delhi Development Authority (DDA) Housing Scheme, etc.

All schemes aim for one single thing – to provide more housing for the rural population of India.
