The high class Kochi Water Metro is ready to sail!
PM Modi flags off India’s first water metro project In Kochi. Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan said, it is a dream project for Kerala and will bring a revolution in the water transport sector in the state and will boosts the tourism industry.
The Kochi water metro project envisages the development of 15 identified routes, connecting 10 islands along a network of routes that span 78 km with a fleet of 78 which are electric hybrid ferries plying to 38 jetties.
The electric hybrid boats are manufactured by the Cochin Shipyard Ltd. The boats have also won the Gucci Electric boats Award at the international award for electric boats as per Moneycontrol report.
The water metro project costs around 1100 crore and it is funded by the government of Kerala and Germany KFW development Bank.
This project intends to introduce modern energy efficient, environment friendly and safe boats with low wake and draft characteristics at a frequency to increase ridership.
The minimum ticket fare for the boat journey is Rs. 20, weekly and monthly passes are also available for regular passengers.
It is expected that more than 1,00,000 islanders will get benefit from the water metro.
