We live in a society believed to be a part of the 21st Century and yet talking about sex related issues or menstruation problems is considered a taboo in the Indian society. It’s high time that we spread awareness about these issues, because the taboo acts as a barrier to the delivery of adequate & effective sexual & menstrual education to the Indian adolescents.
Some issues that have been experienced recently;
- Unintended pregnancy. Young women commonly choose abortion because of unintended pregnancies causing long term health problems to themselves.
- Menstrual hygiene related infections because of lack of knowledge about the appropriate use of sanitary pads
- Lack of knowledge about the appropriate method of using contraceptive tools
But what can we do about it?
Here’s a list of plausible steps that can be taken to advocate the youth about menstruation & sex.
- As a parent, try talking openly and casually about your feelings regarding particular sex-related issues directly to your teens
- Tell your kids about the risks that come with the sexual intercourse and its effects
- In schools, there should be sessions about the ethical way of wearing pads specifically for girls at least twice a year to promote hygiene menstruation.
- Start being inclusive to conversations of sex
- Talk about the process of menstruation and scientifically explain the process of it to young girls so that they’re aware of the internal processes that take place.
Executing the above mentioned steps, will gradually help us attain a society where the youth is informed & aware of their courses of actions.
