The duo’s exceptional performance not only secured a gold medal but also propelled India past their previous best Asiad medal tally.

With 71 medals in their pocket, India has surpassed their previous record set in Jakarta 2018, which stood at 70 medals. This achievement is a testament to the country’s growing dominance in various sporting disciplines.

On this triumph, PM Modi tweeted, “India shines brighter than ever before at the Asian Games 2023! With 71 medals, we are celebrating our best-ever medal tally, a testament to the unparalleled dedication, grit, and sporting spirit of our athletes. Every medal highlights a life journey of hard work and passion. A proud moment for the entire nation. Congrats to our athletes.

The country also bagged a bronze medal in the 35km race walk mixed team final, showcasing their strength in the Asian Games 2023.

The anticipation was building for an all-Indian squash mixed doubles final, but Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh narrowly missed out, settling for bronze after losing to Malaysia’s Aifa Binti and Mohammad Syafiq in the other semifinal.

The boxing ring saw action too, as Parveen competed in the women’s 57kg semifinal, earning a bronze medal.

In track and field events, Harmilan Bains and Chanda competed in the women’s 800m finals. Harmilan, who had already won a silver medal in the women’s 1500m, aimed for her second medal at the continental event. Meanwhile, Avinash Sable, a gold medalist in the men’s 3000m steeplechase, participated in the men’s 5000m race, alongside Gulveer Singh, who had previously secured a bronze in the men’s 10,000m final.

Saurav Ghosal, a stalwart in Indian squash, also made headlines with a resounding victory over Japan’s Ryunosuke Tsukue in the Men’s Singles event.
