The Woman Who Revolutionised Early Education in Surat: Shenaz Hoshang Hilluwala

Shenaz Hoshang Hilluwala, the principal of Hills Nursery, lovingly and endearingly known as Shenaz Miss, has carved a legacy for herself as a teacher by inspiring, motivating and grooming not only the students of Hills Nursery but also the staff and parents.

Being an educator and a motivator for all these years, her journey in the field of education was published in Reader’s Digest Magazine in the September 2014 edition. Another feather in her cap was added when she was awarded the Veteran Educator Award on 22nd January 2017. In 2018, Mrs Shenaz Hoshang Hilluwala was honoured with the ‘Woman Of Dignity International Award’ for her dedicated service to the field of Education. In 2019, the founders of Hills Nursery, Mr and Mrs Hilluwala, were awarded the ‘International Excellence Award’ for the best Kindergarten of the year.

In any enterprise, the roots and the foundation are the base on which the empire stands. At Hills Nursery, they received all of their conditioning from their founders, who are revered across the many branches of the school.

Hills Nursery was inaugurated in Surat at a time when there weren’t many pre-schools that parents could send their children to. She is the visionary who brought to Surat the knowledge that children should start attending playschool at a young age to acclimatise better when they properly start their education. Her school, despite a lack of resources and awareness, followed the highest standards of professionalism regarding the kids’ early education and upbringing, as they are highly impressionable at that age.

She was fortunate enough to receive immense support from her husband, who is also a founding member of the school. A meeting with Miss Hilluwala is all you need to know where her priorities lie. A brave trailblazer who has strived to bring quality early education to Surat after realising how dismal the situation is. The education industry is genuinely indebted to Miss Hilluwala for her immense contribution to the betterment of society.

Her results-driven approach, where parents get to see visible improvement in children, made her famous across all strata of society. Nearing 70 now, Miss Hilluwala is no close to stopping her quest and diligently continues to run and cater to the ever-expanding Hills Nursery family. When asked what’s the best gift you have given to your grandchildren? She replied, “My good health. If I take care of my health and be with them as long as I can, I believe I’ll be giving the best gift of all because watching me even they might get motivated to take care of theirs.”
