Rio de Janeiro in Brazil is examining the possibility of using a similar market-based approach to tackle particulate pollution. If implemented, such a system would represent a major international extension of an idea that was first tested in Surat.

Other Indian states, including Maharashtra, have also shown interest in the approach.

The international attention demonstrates that solutions developed to address local challenges can sometimes become useful examples for communities around the world.

Recognition Through the Earthshot Prize

Gujarat’s work on particulate emissions has also received recognition through The Earthshot Prize, where the state was named a finalist in the Clean Our Air category.
